When you hear the word ‘branding’, what comes to mind? A logo? A splash of colour? A unique font? While these are all part of the picture, branding goes much deeper. It’s the full personality of your business – how it looks, how it sounds and what it stands for – and today, a strong brand is more important than ever.
What is branding?
At its core, branding is the combination of your visual identity, messaging, tone of voice and core values. Together, these elements build recognition, establish trust and form meaningful connections with your audience. To simplify, branding can be broken down into three key areas: brand identity, brand voice and brand guidelines.
This is the visual expression of your brand… your first impression. It includes elements such as logos (yes, variations are important), colour palette, typography, illustrations, icons and photography.
Logo variations allow flexibility across platforms, like a square logo for social media and a horizontal one for brochures. Your colour palette should reflect your brand’s personality and suit your industry – think of Cadbury’s distinctive purple: not only is it instantly recognisable, but it communicates familiarity and heritage.
Typography also plays a key role in recognition and using a consistent set of fonts helps unify your presence. Icons and illustrations add depth, while photography should complement your overall aesthetic and reinforce consistency across all brand touchpoints.
This is how your brand sounds. Just like people, every brand needs a consistent way of communicating. Whether your tone is friendly, professional, light-hearted or informative, it should reflect your brand’s personality and resonate with your audience.
Your messaging should clearly communicate your mission, values and unique strengths. Your internal culture and beliefs also play a part in this, whether you prioritise sustainability or foster a collaborative workplace, these values give customers insight into who you are behind the scenes and build long-term trust.
Once your identity and tone of voice are established, brand guidelines keep everything aligned. These documents provide clear instructions for internal teams and external partners on how to (and how not to), use your branding.
Without them, things can quickly go awry, leading to inconsistent visuals, unclear messaging and a disjointed customer experience. Brand guidelines help protect your brand and ensure it’s always represented well.
Why does branding matter?
Strong branding builds trust, creates emotional connections and helps your business stand out. It adds value to your offering and supports marketing/communication efforts.
Think about shopping for a luxury candle. You expect high-quality products, beautiful design and a cohesive brand experience, from packaging to website. If everything feels mismatched or unpolished, it creates uncertainty, which leads to distrust. Consistency builds confidence.
Remember the ‘rule of seven’: people need to see your brand at least seven times before making a purchase, so be memorable, stay consistent and make each interaction count.
In the end, branding is far more than just a logo; it’s the foundation for trust, loyalty and lasting impact.
